This is why we are excited to announce that October is both National Oral Hygiene Month as well as National Orthodontic Health Month. With these two months focused around the importance of oral health and hygiene we wanted to provide our patients with some tips on our to maintain that oral health during a month we candy is king! Halloween is just around the corner and with this Holiday comes loads of candy. Let’s take a look at some things that you can put into practice to make sure your child doesn’t ruin their orthodontic progress.
Candy Trade In
One great way to make sure that your child doesn’t consume too much candy or reverse their orthodontic progress is to have them do a trade in. It is up to you as a parent what you want to give them in return such as ten pieces of candy in trade of not having to do a chore for the week. It doesn’t really matter what you trade them for their candy as it is simply a way to get your child to eat less candy. As long as your child finds it to be a fair trade, everybody wins!
Candies To Avoid
As you may or may not have seen on our website, there are multiple types of food and candy that should be avoided when your child is undergoing orthodontic treatment. Before you child goes out trick-or-treating, make sure to have a conversation with them to choose candies that are safe for their treatment. Should some sticky or hard candies such as Starburst or Jolly Ranchers show up in your child’s bag of goodies, you will have to remove them. Not only can these types of candies cause cavities but they can also led to breaking wires and slowing your child’s orthodontic progress.
Do The Daily Four
Most of you may not have heard of National Orthodontic Hygiene Month that is run by the American Dental Hygienists’ Association in partnership with the Wrigley Oral Healthcare Program. The purpose of this month is to raise awareness on the importance of oral health and how to maintain it. This year’s slogan is “Do the daily 4” where people are encouraged to do the following for a healthier smile:
- Brush at least twice a day
- Floss daily
- Rinse with mouthwash
- Chew sugar-free gum
