Now that summer is almost here, soon it's time to pull out the shorts, tee shirts and sandals and get ready for some great outdoor fun! The team at Crichigno Orthodontics is looking forward to the warmer weather as we're sure you are too! Our Oakville & Hamilton orthodontist, Dr. Nick, along with his amazing staff would like to share a few summertime recipes with you here which are safe to eat while wearing braces.

Sweet Strawberry Summer Smoothie

There's nothing more delicious and refreshing on a warm day than a smoothie! This recipe is fast and easy to make and is perfect for breakfast or for anything you're craving some sweet and cold!

2 cups fresh strawberries
1 cup milk
I ½ cups strawberry low-fat yogurt

Directions: Put the strawberries in a strainer and rinse under cold water and then pat the strawberries dry with paper towels. Cut the caps off the strawberries and then place the berries along with the milk and yogurt into a blender or food processor. Cover and blend on high for about ½ minute until smooth. Pour into glasses and enjoy!

Grilled Chicken Soft Tacos

This recipe is great for those grill parties and get-togethers you have planned this summer!

2 to 3 boneless chicken breasts, pounded
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 tablespoon cumin
dash of black pepper
1 tablespoon packed brown sugar
1 to 2 tablespoons cooking oil
½ tablespoon paprika
pinch of crushed red pepper
pinch of salt
8 flour tortillas

Your choice of taco toppings such as lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, salsa or sour cream

Directions: Mix the dry ingredients together and rub onto chicken breasts. Allow the chicken breasts to stand for ½ hour. In the meantime, set your grill to medium heat and brush the oil over the grates. Then grill the chicken on both sides until done. When the chicken is cooked, dice it into very small pieces. Place the chicken in the tortillas and top with your favorite taco toppings and enjoy!

Watermelon Sorbet

This wonderful recipe is sure to keep you cool on those hottest days. Note: you will need an ice-cream maker for this recipe.

¾ cup water
¼ cup sugar
1 teaspoon lime juice
2 to 3 cups of watermelon, diced with no seeds or rinds

Directions: In a saucepan, heat the water, sugar and lime juice on medium high for about two minutes while stirring to make sure the sugar dissolves. Chill this “syrup” for about ½ hour in refrigerator. In the meantime, put the watermelon pieces into a blender or food processor to make a puree. Then just add the puree to the syrup and blend. Freeze the sorbet in an ice-cream maker according to the manufacturer's directions and serve immediately!

Everyone here at your local Hamilton & Oakville orthodontics practice would like to wish all our patients and their families a fun and safe summer! Just remember to steer clear of all those summertime foods and snacks that can damage your braces so you don't have to make any emergency appointments to fix something that breaks!
