Foods to Avoid

When you are a patient at Crichigno Orthodontics, you can rest assured that your smile is our first priority. We not only want to provide our patients with a beautiful smile, but also a healthy one that they can wear with pride. Both Dr. Crichigno and his friendly team work hard to give patients the smile that they have always wanted, and that is why it is so important for patients to help the Doctor maintain progress. While in braces, we recommend that you avoid a number of foods in order to maintain a healthy smile during the orthodontic process.

Sticky Foods

It is important to avoid any foods that could be damaging to your orthodontic appliances while undergoing treatment. One of the largest offenders of breaking orthodontic appliances are sticky foods. If you are ever unsure of a type of food, please don't hesitate to call into our Hamilton office to inquire. In the meantime, here are some examples of what you should avoid:

  • Gum
  • Licorice
  • Toffee
  • Tootsie Rolls
  • Caramels

Hard Foods

Just like sticky foods, hard foods can be extremely damaging to the orthodontic process. Again, if you have any questions as to what qualifies as a hard food to avoid, please contact us for more information. Here are some examples of hard foods that should be avoided:

  • Ice
  • Nuts
  • Hard Candies (Jolly Ranchers)
  • Hard Taco Shells
  • Apples & Carrots (Unless cut into small pieces)

Sugary Foods & Drinks

Most Doctors agree that in general sugary foods and drinks should be consumed minimally. Sugary foods and drinks are not only damaging to your orthodontics appliances but your teeth as well. Here are some sugary foods and drinks to avoid in order to protect your teeth:

  • Cake
  • Ice Cream
  • Candy
  • Soda
  • Gatorade
  • Kool-Aide
